July 28th, 2023 – Kolonia, Pohnpei

The Board of Directors for the Pacific Islands Development Bank held their quarterly meeting in Kolonia, Pohnpei on Friday, July 28th, 2023 following the FSM Joint National Inauguration Ceremony held on Wednesday, July 26th, 2023, for H.E. President Wesley Simina, Honorable Vice President Aren Palik and the Honorable Members of the 23rd FSM National Congress.

The PIDB Board was fortunate once more to be joined by the Chairman of the Board of Governors and Member of RMI Nitijela, Honorable Speaker Kenneth Kedi, whose continued presence and participation in the meetings of the Board of Directors maintains a close collaborative relationship with Directors and Management, and demonstrates his commitment to stay informed of the Bank’s activities. All members of the PIDB Board of Directors were in attendance, with the exception of RMI and Yap representatives on the Board who designated proxies to participate in the meeting on their behalf.

Among the key topics on the meeting agenda were the receipt of $1 Million new Guam share capital contribution, $1 Million in RMI funds received contributed by the Marshall Islands Development Bank, the Bank’s humanitarian relief aid to families in need on Guam after Super Typhoon Mawar, a new anticipated Palau housing subdivision development initiative, formal establishment of DB PRIME (the association of FAS development banks), and the formal welcome of new Chuuk representation on the Board of Directors, Honorable Vice Speaker Andrew May, among others.

During the week in Pohnpei State, the Members of the Board of Directors paid courtesy visits to H.E. President Wesley Simina and Honorable Vice President Aren Palik; Honorable Speaker and Vice Speaker of the 23rd FSM National Congress, Speaker Esmond Moses and Vice Speaker Robson Romolow, respectively; Honorable Speaker Marvin Yamaguchi of Pohnpei State Legislature; and Honorable Governor Reed Oliver of Pohnpei State. PIDB is very appreciative of the commitment and continuing support of National and State leaders, and the Bank, during the courtesy visits, restated its commitment to maintaining strong working relationships and endeavoring to make meaningful long-term positive impacts in communities throughout the FSM and the region.

PIDB was honored to receive a special invitation to attend the Joint Inauguration Ceremony & Celebrations on July 26th, 2023, alongside the region’s leaders, attending dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, and heads of many other regional organizations, partners, and donor institutions. Members of the Board and delegation are grateful for the inclusion in the auspicious occasion and related events and once again congratulate all elected leaders of the FSM.

The Board and Management express warm appreciation and Kalangahn! to Pohnpei State Governor and his administrative staff for once more assisting with meeting preparations and granting the use of the Governor’s conference room for the Board of Directors meeting.

These on island, in-person, meetings of the Board continue to provide opportunities for the Board of Directors to experience first- hand the economic and social conditions of the region’s island communities, thus enabling meaningful and effective policymaking as a collective decision-making body.

The next PIDB Board of Directors meeting will be held in October 2023 in Chuuk State.
